Lime dosing ensures best practice. Acid is completely neutralised and most metals present in typical ASS affected waters are precipitated out resulting in metal concentrations reduced below the regulators guidelines. Most common metal contaminants present in ASS and Potential ASS (PASS) affected waters will include iron, aluminium, and arsenic to name the most common. These contaminants ultimately cause detrimental environmental and economic impact to off-site sources such as groundwater aquifers and surface water bodies. There are also possible health effects caused by ASS impacts on groundwater, [Department of Environment Regulation 24 Treatment and management of soil and water in acid sulfate soil landscapes (June 2015)] particularly arsenic contamination.
WTSA has been successfully treating ASS affected waters with lime for nearly 30 years. Treated water has been returned to the environment which has benefited remediation outcomes by increasing the acid buffering ability and increasing the alkalinity returned to the environment.
